You have ideas.
You have words.
You have a dream.

To put them all together, you need one more thing.

Time.

The Writer's Time

The Writer’s Time

A 7-week Gateless Writing program for you to give dedicated time and energy to your writing project.

September 26 - November 11, 2022

There comes a moment when you’ve written for a while. You have a pile of pages, thousands of words.

Or, you’ve thought about writing for so long. You sense that you might finally be ready to cross into writing.

What you need now is safe, steady, supported time.

  • Time to write more scenes.

  • Time to put pieces together.

  • Time to read through all the pages you’ve got.

  • Time to edit using Gateless principles.

  • Time to experiment and explore.

  • Time to learn new skills.

The Writer’s Time gives you the scheduled time and support to really be with your work at last — or for the first time.

When you have time to be with your work, you can harvest its bounty.

The Writer’s Time has three parts.

  • Weekly 1:1 Writing Sessions

You get six (6) private 90-minute 1:1 work sessions with Becky.

This part of The Writer’s Time is the heart of the program. Why?

    1. It is primarily time for you to write. This is a total of 540 minutes devoted to you and your work.

    2. Such steady practice over many weeks helps you develop habits of mind, space, and writing to keep writing an active, dedicated part of your life as the seasons turn.

    3. It’s where you get a total of 9 coaching hours with Becky, who believes 100 percent in you and your work, and who can help you see your power and potential.

    4. We customize this 1:1 time to your needs. As Becky creates a safe, sturdy, enlivening container for you to work, we also check in about your work, talk through obstacles, find resources to support you, and celebrate your writing.

See testimonials below on what it’s like to work with Becky.

  • Gateless Feedback & Salon

Each week, you share up to 1000 words with the group in a shared Google Drive folder.

Each week, you read one other writer’s work and provide written Gateless feedback (between 4 and 10 comments per piece). You receive comments from one other writer. Becky will guide you in the gentle art of written Gateless Comments.

Reading and commenting will take about 1 hour each week.

This part of The Writer’s Time helps you do two things.

    1. You get to practice preparing written work to be shared with other readers. (Becky will support you in this process.)

    2. You get to refine your ability to notice what you love in writing and put that positive response into words. This develops both your sense of craft, and your feeling of agency to use it.

These are vital experiences for both confidence and skill on the page!

PLUS: A weekly optional salon for generating new work. These will be recorded, so you can access the meditation and prompt at your leisure.

Salons help you develop trust in your creativity, and they connect you to a deep, funny, supportive writing community.

  • Showcase

We end our session with a 90-minute Showcase night, in which you get to read your writing aloud, receive Gateless feedback, and ask any and all questions you have about developing the work.

This part of The Writer’s Time helps you…

    1. Edit and revise the work for sharing aloud.

    2. It also helps you hear the work and witness its energy in real time.

    3. And it’s so much fun! It’s our party time!

Your relationship to your work deepens as you spend time with it in these new ways.

Working with Becky

To write with Becky is to be held, to be heard, to be taken seriously. Becky has an amazing ability to hold both the writer and the work, and to dive straight to the heart of what is working, and why it matters. Her feedback is resonant and relevant, and always helped me to bring the best bits of my work forward, either in the piece she had given me feedback on in that moment, or in the next thing I wrote.

I can only think of one word to describe Becky Karush: amazing. Amazing in the sense of the word before it became a meaningless proclamation. Her generosity, her insights, her ability to get the gestalt of a piece of writing is truly remarkable. And her voice! It would calm anyone. She brings her full heart and magnificent brain to our sessions, and I am so grateful for connecting with her.

writer, director of Arts Escape Writing and Literature Program, musician

I recently sent a major part of an in-process book to Becky. She was the first person to read it and her feedback was so smart and supportive. I received detailed written thoughts that were in direct response to my questions and concerns, as well as her own wise thoughts about the work. In addition, our phone conversation about the work was fluent, intuitive and so, so helpful.

About Becky Karush

About Gateless Writing

Becky Karush is a certified teacher of the Gateless Writing method and has taught more than 300 writing salons. She graduated from Wesleyan University (B.A.) and Emerson College (M.A.), and she worked as a teacher, farmer, journalist, Disney magazine editor, summer camp counselor, and copywriter. She’s run her own business since 2012.

Becky is the founder of Read to Me Literary Arts, where writers learn to dazzle readers with fresh, brilliant writing. We know you can write amazing things, and so you do.

Through writing salons, 1:1 coaching, the Read to Me podcast, and tools to support your solo writing practice, we walk away from the cult of criticism. We help surface your innate talent, so you can write the stories that are yours alone to write.

Her family is Christopher, almost 10; Bob, the husband (also a writer); and Wendy, mom, who lives in their basement grotto (somewhat nicer than it sounds.) They are all readers. Three are introverts; one loves meeting new people. Right now they are reading Rivka Galchen’s RAT RULE 79. (A lot nicer than it sounds.) They live in New Hampshire and have a yard full of ideas. Ranger is their cat.

Gateless Writing is a neuroscience-based method that helps quiet the inner critic so you can tap into your innate genius with ease, whether you’re writing a novel, a proposal, a social media post, or tonight’s journal entry.

Gateless helps writers of all backgrounds who write for all sorts of reasons—for work, for fun, for creative pursuits, for emotional release.

It helps you break through creative blocks and expand in creative brilliance—without criticism or judgment.
